Travel Locally – Why You Should Explore Your Own Backyard

You Can Accomplish Bucket List-Worthy Experiences With Local Travel

Far too often we think that we have to travel far away to have incredible vacations when that couldn’t be further from the truth. I am here to change your mindset on staying local, taking a staycation, or planning a weekend getaway close to home. Each of these trips can offer incredible experiences you thought only possible by traveling to faraway places. Travel locally and I promise that you’ll see what I mean.

Ticking Off a Bucket List Item by Traveling Locally Back to the City Where I Was Born

I recently experienced the ultimate travel irony. After traveling the globe, I recently ticked off a major bucket list item in my hometown. So often, we ignore where we live when planning our travels for the year. Amsterdam is well-known for its tulip fields, but cities all over the globe host their own tulip festivals. While not as large, the rows upon rows of crimson red, citrus orange, and bold yellow tulips are just as stunning.  This story begins at one such festival.

Having always wanted to go up in a hot air balloon, I couldn’t believe my luck when the opportunity arose to enjoy a hot air balloon ride at the Abbotsford Tulip Festival. The best part? I was able to bring my mom along for the ride. Without an International airfare cost, it was easy to swing by my mom’s house and pick her up for the event.

I was born in the town of Abbotsford, BC. While I reside 1.5 hours away in Vancouver, my mother still lives in Abbotsford. Every year, Lakeland Flowers hosts the annual Abbotsford Tulip Festival where they showcase 22 acres of bright, colorful tulips. It’s a lovely way to spend an afternoon.

Taking my mother to The Abbotsford Tulip Festival for a hot air balloon ride was an amazing, and local, experience.

This year, I was invited to a special event at the Abbotsford Tulip Festival where they would be hosting hot air balloon rides. I couldn’t believe my luck! I have always wanted to ride in a hot air balloon and so has my mother. Taking place just before Mother’s Day, I invited my mom to accompany me at this event. We strolled through the acres of tulips, sipped local wine, and enjoyed a ride in a hot air balloon. It was nothing short of magical – and it was local.

The Allure of Local Travel

Local travel has an allure that attracts both seasoned travelers and those who are new to exploring. There’s a certain charm in discovering hidden gems and secret spots that are often overlooked by locals and tourists alike. Who doesn’t love being the first one to share a cool new spot with others? By choosing to travel locally, you open yourself up to a world of possibilities right on your doorstep.

One of the main advantages of local travel is the ease and convenience it offers. No long-haul flights or exhausting layovers – simply hop in your car or take a short bus or train ride to your destination. Or, better yet, hop on your bike and go for a spin around town. You get to experience firsthand the traditions, customs, and flavors that make each spot unique. I bet you’ll be surprised by what you find.

Where I live in Vancouver, each area of the city is vastly different from the next. It’s always interesting for me to walk down a street I haven’t strolled in a while. I always discover new restaurants and shops along the way.

In the suburbs and nearby cities, there are mountains to hike, lakes to kayak, gondolas to ride, local award-winning wines to sip, and the list goes on. I’m sure you have adventures waiting to be discovered right around the corner as well.

Travel Locally to Uncover Hidden Gems

If you are tired of the same old tourist hotspots and overcrowded destinations, it’s time to embark on a local travel adventure and discover your own backyard. Forget about long-haul flights and jet lag – there’s a world of wonders waiting to be explored just around the corner.

Local travel offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the culture, history, and natural beauty of your region. Plus, by supporting local businesses and communities, you can make a positive impact on the local places you visit. So pack your bags, bring your curiosity, and get ready to discover the hidden treasures and unforgettable experiences that await you when you choose to travel locally.

Is it Really Traveling if You Don’t Leave Home?

Absolutely, yes it is! Whether you want to call it a staycation or a local getaway, it is still traveling. Always remember that where you live is a destination for others. Every major city is surrounded by suburban towns waiting to be discovered.

I once drove 2 hours to spend the weekend at a cabin in the woods. I drank wine while soaking in a barrel tub on the patio overlooking a serene lake. Sounds heavenly, right? It was and it was local! I didn’t need to jet-off to an exotic destination when this gem was hiding right where I live.

The Sandpiper Resort is located on Harrison Lake and each cabin has its own private patio with stunning views. The resort boasts a picturesque golf course as well as a restaurant. This local getaway was the perfect weekend vacation and all I had to do was drive for a couple of hours to achieve serenity.

Benefits of Traveling Locally

Traveling locally not only provides a new perspective on where you live but it also brings with it numerous benefits.

Supporting Local Businesses and Communities

First and foremost, one of the benefits of traveling locally is that it allows you to support your local economy. By staying home and spending money in local establishments, you contribute to the growth and sustainability of your community.

When you choose to stay in locally-owned accommodations, dine at family-owned restaurants, and shop at independent stores, you contribute directly to the local economy.  This means that your travels become a win-win situation – you get to enjoy new experiences while helping the local businesses thrive.

Pro tip – when you travel locally, be sure to avoid chain restaurants and opt for small, locally-owned and operated businesses and restaurants.

Engaging With Your Community

In addition to supporting local businesses, consider engaging with the community on a deeper level. Attend local events, visit museums and art galleries, and participate in workshops or classes that offer insights into the region’s culture and heritage. By immersing yourself in the local community, you not only gain a deeper understanding of the place you’re living but you also make lasting connections with the people who call it home.

Reducing Your Carbon Footprint

Another advantage of local travel is the reduced environmental impact. By choosing to explore your region, you eliminate the need for long-haul flights, which are major contributors to carbon emissions. This eco-friendly approach to travel helps to preserve the natural beauty of your surroundings and ensures that future generations can also enjoy these hidden gems.

Uncovering Hidden Gems When You Travel Locally

You may be surprised to discover that there are hidden gems right in your backyard, waiting to be explored. Start by researching your local area.

Searching For Local Travel Ideas

If you aren’t sure where to start when you travel locally, Google your city name + attractions. Or check Travelocity or another travel-related website. Look for lesser-known attractions, off-the-beaten-path hiking trails, or hidden beaches. You can also ask friends, family, and locals for recommendations – they often have insider knowledge about the best-kept secrets in the region.

Another great place to look for local places you may not know about is on social media. Instagram is full of travel influencers sharing new, hidden, and hot spots. Try searching your city or town name and see what comes up. Search your city’s tourism account as well as its hashtags.

When uncovering hidden gems, it’s important to keep an open mind and be willing to explore beyond the obvious. Venture into neighborhoods you’ve never visited before, try local cuisine at hidden restaurants or attend cultural events that showcase the unique heritage of the area. By stepping out of your comfort zone and embracing the unknown, you’ll stumble upon hidden treasures that will leave a lasting impression.

Search Nearby Cities and Towns As Well

When you travel locally, that can be across town, or to another city entirely. Locals have a bad habit of sticking to their own neighborhoods and not venturing into others. For example, where I live in the West End of Vancouver is drastically different from Commercial Drive, a mere 15-20 minute drive, or Skytrain ride away. The vibe, the people, the restaurants, and the shops are all unique to that area. It also happens to be a great place to sample craft beer, which we don’t have in the West End.

Within a 1-2 hour drive from the city, there are a myriad of wineries waiting to be discovered. Even more in The Okanagan Valley, a 3-5 hour drive from Vancouver and perfect for a long weekend getaway. You may dream of visiting Italy or France, but in the meantime, check to see if there are any local wineries near where you live. Improve your wine knowledge locally so you’re ready for the big leagues when it’s time for your dream trip.

Exploring Special Events in Your Local Area

Special events are another exciting aspect of local travel. From festivals and concerts to food fairs and art exhibitions, there’s always something happening in your local area. These events not only provide entertainment but also offer a glimpse into the local culture and community.

To discover special events in your area, keep an eye on local event calendars, check social media groups and pages, and sign up for newsletters from local organizations. Many cities and towns have annual events that draw visitors from far and wide, so make sure to mark your calendar and plan your visit accordingly. Attending these special events will not only enrich your appreciation for where you live but also create lasting memories.

Planning Your Local Travel Adventure

Planning a local travel adventure is similar to planning a traditional trip but with a few unique considerations. Start by choosing a destination within a reasonable distance from your home – this could be a nearby city, a small town, or even a rural area known for its natural beauty. Next, decide on the duration of your trip and the activities you would like to engage in.

Research accommodations in the area – whether you prefer a cozy bed and breakfast, a boutique hotel, or a camping experience, there are options to suit every traveler’s taste. Don’t forget to make reservations in advance, especially during peak travel seasons or for popular special events.

Once you have a rough itinerary in place, make a list of attractions and hidden gems you don’t want to miss. Create a map or use a travel app to plan your route, ensuring that you maximize your time and make the most of your local travel adventure.

Pro tip: Even when I travel locally, I use the app Roadtrippers to plan my road trips. It shows you a variety of stops along the way. There is a free version and I encourage you to map out your trip and start discovering all the places you never knew existed.

Tips for Finding Hidden Gems and Special Events When You Travel Locally
