When people think of Orlando, Florida, their minds often jump to its world-renowned theme parks—Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando, and SeaWorld. All are located on the city’s bustling west side. However, Orlando offers so much more beyond the thrill of roller coasters and character meet-and-greets. In fact, a study commissioned by Visit Orlando revealed it would take an astounding 120 days to experience every attraction the city has to offer.
There’s no better time to vist than during the Fall, when the weather cools and the crowds thin. It’s the ideal time to discover the other unique activities that make Orlando a must-visit destination. From outdoor adventures to festive fall events, here are my top picks for enjoying Orlando.
North Orlando
Winter Park
Once the retreat of northern industrialists, Winter Park has grown into a cultural gem, thanks to the lasting influence of families like the Mizells, Morses, and Geniuses. Start your visit with the iconic Scenic Boat Tour. It takes you across three of the six lakes in Central Florida’s Chain of Lakes.
The tour offers a fascinating look at the area’s history and stunning views of Rollins College, and the Albin Polasek Museum and Sculpture Gardens. The historic Capen House, famously moved across the lake in pieces—is fondly nicknamed Fred and Ginger for their graceful ‘dance’ over the water.
After your boat tour, immerse yourself in one of the largest collections of Louis Comfort Tiffany’s masterpieces at the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, including the breathtaking chapel from the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair.
Once you’ve soaked in the art, head over to the Alfond Inn, where all profits support Rollins College scholarships, and savor a meal at Hamilton’s Kitchen, a laid-back restaurant that pairs local ingredients with Southern hospitality.
For a perfect end to your day, explore the art-filled halls of the Inn, showcasing works on loan from the Rollins Museum of Art. Or take a leisurely stroll along Park Avenue, Winter Park’s premier shopping district, to discover why visitors return time and again to this charming enclave.
Winter Garden
Located northwest of Orlando, Winter Garden offers a playful and welcoming atmosphere, perfect for a relaxing day out. Start by renting a comfort bike from Bikes and Blades to explore the area at your own pace.
Be sure to catch a performance at the historic Winter Garden Theatre. You’ll feel at home thanks to its intimate setting—and enjoy the unique feature of a bar. Conveniently located right on stage, they serve drinks before the show, during intermission, and afterward. Take a leisurely stroll down Plant Street, lined with charming shops and inviting restaurants. You’ll have your pick of excellent dining options. They include the upscale Chef’s Table, the cozy French café Rosallie’s, and the lively and casual Hangry Bison.
Kayak enthusiasts, get ready for an unforgettable adventure in Apopka, located northwest of Orlando. With Get Up and Go Kayaking, you’ll glide through the pristine waters of the Wekiva River starting from Rock Springs and into the magical King’s Landing. Paddling in clear-bottom kayaks gives you a mesmerizing view of the river’s sandy bottom. As you pass ‘The Lobby’ (the nickname for the first part of your trip), the water opens up to reveal an underwater world you won’t want to miss.
For those feeling adventurous, make a splash by jumping off a cypress tree. Or swing from an overhanging limb to cool off at one of two stops along the way. If you’re up for an epic journey, you can even paddle all the way to the Atlantic Ocean. Believe it or not, one kayaker made the full trip in just 26 hours—talk about dedication.
Downtown Orlando
It’s More Than a Business Hub
Downtown Orlando is more than just a business hub. It’s a vibrant destination brimming with exciting entertainment options and cultural experiences. Start your visit in the Church Street area. You’ll find an array of top-notch restaurants perfect for grabbing a bite before heading to the Amway Center to catch an Orlando Magic game.
The stadium offers more than just sports. Enjoy live music performances that bring a unique energy to the game day experience.
For fans of the arts, don’t miss the Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center, which boasts some of the best acoustics in the world. It’s a premier venue for concerts, Broadway shows, and more.
From Science to Shakespeare
There are many theatrical experiences and museums to visit. Try the Orlando Science Center when you have the kids or grandkids in tow. They can play amongst the alligators or have a lesson on kinetic energy.
Love Shakespeare? Then Orlando Shakes is the perfect theater for you. With a rotating lineup of live performances featuring professional actors, you’ll get to experience the Bard’s works like never before. I’ve never laughed as hard—or understood Shakespeare as clearly—as I did during their brilliant production of Henry V. Whether you’re a seasoned fan or a newcomer to Shakespeare, Orlando Shakes delivers unforgettable performances that bring these timeless stories to life.
Craving a peaceful stroll through a beautiful botanical garden? Head over to Leu Gardens, a stunning oasis in the heart of Orlando. While you’re there, be sure to visit the historic main house, once owned by David W. Mizell, a notable figure from Orlando’s past and the only sheriff ever killed in the line of duty. The gardens offer a perfect blend of history and natural beauty, making it a must-see spot for both nature lovers and history buffs alike.
Orlando Auto Museum
If you’re a fan of all things automotive or have a soft spot for James Bond 007, plan a full day of family fun at the Orlando Auto Museum in Dezerland Park. This meticulously curated collection showcases cars from the 1920s to the present, including famous vehicles from both the small and big screen. Be sure to check out the world’s longest limo and the fascinating Military Museum.
Bond enthusiasts will be thrilled with the 007 museum. Filled with iconic vehicles, movie posters, and even the tiniest Bond memorabilia—it is a true treasure trove that could take hours to explore. When you’re ready for more, Dezerland Park has something for everyone —GoKarts, a bowling alley, an arcade, and a movie theater.
ICON Park
Orlando’s Ultimate Entertainment Destination
International Drive, or I-Drive, offers endless options to I-Play and I-Eat, with ICON Park at its heart. Take in sweeping views of Orlando on the Giant Wheel—if it’s in service. Or dare to ride the StarFlyer, a set of giant swings that send you soaring high above the city. If you’re really up for an adrenaline rush, the Slingshot does exactly what it promises, launching you into the air at breakneck speed. For a different kind of challenge, test your problem-solving skills at The Escape Game, where themed escape rooms push your wits to the limit. We barely escaped ‘The Depths’ with just 46 seconds left on the clock—talk about a nail-biter!
Museums, an Aquarium, and Wonderworks
For another mind-bending experience, check out the Museum of Optical Illusions. See how many fun and quirky photos you can snap—perfect for adding some creative flair to your social media feed. While you’re at it, swing by Madame Tussauds. You can pose with lifelike wax figures of your favorite singers, actors, and even iconic Marvel and DC superheroes. For a calmer, more serene visit, spend some time with quieter heroes of the sea at Sea Life Aquarium, where you can get up close with fascinating marine life.
At the whimsical Wonderworks, get ready to have your senses turned upside down—literally! This upside-down attraction is filled with adventures that defy gravity and ignite the imagination. From rope courses that challenge your balance to intense laser tag battles. Plus fascinating space exhibits and mind-bending art, every corner of Wonderworks delivers an otherworldly adrenaline rush. It’s a playground for curious minds and thrill-seekers alike!
After all the excitement, you’ll definitely be hungry and ready for some fun. Head over to Ole Red, where you can indulge in mouthwatering Southern cuisine while enjoying live country music from Blake Shelton’s Nashville friends. We were lucky enough to meet the Executive Chef. He’s always adding a unique twist to the menu, keeping it fresh and distinctly Orlando. Often featuring local ingredients like alligator, it’s the perfect spot to unwind, eat well, and soak up the lively atmosphere.
South Orlando
Wild Florida
Head to Southside Orlando for a wild adventure at Wild Florida, where you can experience the northern part of the Everglades in an unforgettable way. Start with an exhilarating airboat tour (choose from 30 or 60 minutes) that takes you deep into the wetlands. Afterward, explore Gator Park. Or embark on a drive-through safari where you’ll encounter a variety of non-predator animals. They offer a safari experience comparable to a much pricier African tour, right here in Florida.
GatorLand
Just a short drive from town, GatorLand is a must-visit. As the oldest amusement park in Florida, it’s still run by the grandchildren of the original founders, preserving its charm and authenticity. Here, you can get up close and personal with alligators, crocodiles, kookaburras, and tortoises. For a real thrill, soar high above them on the exhilarating zipline tour, guaranteed to get your heart racing. Even more impressive, GatorLand offers the only handicapped-accessible zipline I’ve ever seen, ensuring everyone can join in on the adventure.
Pioneer Village at Shingle Creek
For history buffs, a visit to the Pioneer Village at Shingle Creek is a must. Take a walk through this authentic village to see how Florida’s early pioneers lived, worked, and shaped the region. You’ll learn the origins of the term ‘Cracker’ and gain insight into how these settlers adapted to the land, playing a key role in developing the state’s cattle industry. It’s a fascinating glimpse into Florida’s past and the resilience of its earliest inhabitants.
Medieval Times
For a fun and unique foodie experience, head to the Medieval Times dinner show. You’ll feast like royalty on hearty foods such as tomato bisque, roasted chicken, corn on the cob, and cornbread. As you enjoy your meal, cheer on your section’s knight. They compete in jousting and sword fighting, all in an effort to win the favor of the royal guest in attendance. It’s an interactive and entertaining way to dive into a medieval adventure.
Crayola Experience
Also in South Orlando, the Crayola Experience is a colorful wonderland for kids (and kids at heart). Think of it as a Chuck E. Cheese on steroids, where you can create your own personalized crayon label. Make vibrant drip art. Enjoy interactive shows. Dive into a variety of hands-on creative activities. And, of course, there’s plenty of space to play. Located at the Florida Mall, it’s easily accessible, especially if you’re staying nearby at the Courtyard by Marriott Orlando South. It’s a great spot to base yourself for visits to Sea World or Universal Orlando.
When you’re in this part of town, make sure to stop by American Social Kitchen and Bar (AmSo) and Seasons 52. These two favorite spots to unwind along Sand Lake’s Restaurant Row are both conveniently located near Universal Studios. At AmSo, treat yourself to the mahi tacos for a burst of flavor or indulge in their freshly made doughnut dessert.
Over at Seasons 52, Orlando’s Magical Dining offers the best deal in town. Enjoy a meal that starts with a soup or salad followed by a crispy flatbread topped with the freshest pepperoni and sun-dried tomatoes. For the main course, choose between perfectly seared scallops, filet mignon, or cedar-planked salmon. Finish with a delightful mini-indulgence that satisfies any sweet tooth.
West Orlando
On the west side of Orlando, you’ll find the big three: Universal, SeaWorld, and Walt Disney World. All of them are packed with fun, and as a Florida resident, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed having season passes for two of them.
But beyond the main attractions, don’t overlook LEGOLAND, not quite halfway to Tampa, where the new Pirate Quest experience opened in 2023. This 20-minute boat tour includes interactive memory tasks and is located right next to the must-see water show. You can also enjoy thrilling coasters, 3-D adventures, or cool off at their water park, which is only accessible from within LEGOLAND itself. If you’re traveling with little ones who love Peppa Pig, they’ll be over the moon with a visit to the Peppa Pig Theme Park just next door.
East Orlando
Kennedy Space Center
A visit to Florida’s Space Coast isn’t complete without exploring the Kennedy Space Center. You can easily spend hours just soaking in the exhibits. Don’t miss the chance to meet an astronaut at 10 a.m. or 2 p.m. We were lucky enough to spend 2.5 hours with flight engineer José Hernández, and it was an unforgettable experience. Whether you’re a space geek or simply curious, you’ll be captivated by the rich history of the space program and the future developments that continue to push the boundaries of exploration.
Be sure to take the 20-minute bus ride out to the Artemis project area, where you’ll find even more exhibits including the actual consoles used in the 1966 mission. Stand in awe of the colossal crawlers and the mighty Saturn V Rocket, a true testament to human ingenuity and ambition.
It’s hard to believe just how much there is to see and do in Orlando. Come for the theme parks but stay for all the other exciting and unique experiences that make this city truly special. You’ll be glad you did.
Many of the attractions mentioned here provided me complimentary access through coordination with Visit Orlando’s Media VIP Passport.
