Whether you’re a longtime fan or planning your first visit, this guide covers everything you need to know. From the park’s history to the bites to keep an eye out for.

History of Knott’s Berry Farm

The story of Knott’s Berry Farm begins with Walter Knott. A farmer and entrepreneur who helped cultivate and popularize the beloved boysenberry.  A boysenberry, if you are not familiar, is a hybrid fruit of a loganberry, raspberry, and blackberry.

What started as a humble roadside berry stand in Buena Park has now grown. It grew into a restaurant, then a marketplace, and eventually one of California’s most iconic theme park destinations.

The park’s historic roots and culinary beginnings remain woven into its landscape. Guests can still stroll through Ghost Town, visit Town Hall, and explore the Boysenberry Museum. The museum shares the history of the boysenberry and its role in shaping the park’s identity.

Even modern additions like Fiesta Village and high-thrill roller coaster attractions coexist with this agricultural legacy. The annual Knott’s Berry Farm Boysenberry Festival is perhaps the most delicious tribute to that origin story.

What is the Knott’s Berry Farm Boysenberry Festival?

The Knott’s Boysenberry Festival is a limited-time celebration dedicated entirely to the famous berry that built the park. More than just a typical food event or state fair. It’s an immersive experience that blends a food festival atmosphere with a family-friendly theme park. It also spans a month-long celebration.

Throughout the festival, guests of all ages are invited on a culinary journey that spans the park. Food booths line the walkways, offering numerous food creations inspired by boysenberry flavors.

There are multiple musical stages that come alive with live music performances.  Additional unique finds are boysenberry pie-eating contests for the public. There are live animal petting zoos in Old MacDonald’s Barn, and a musical dance celebration called Knott’s Preserved.

The Boysenberry Festival Crafts Fair adds another layer of charm. It showcases a wide selection of local crafters selling handmade goods, artisan treats, and berry-themed souvenirs.  We loved watching the makers blow molten hot glass or slice a wooden log with a chainsaw, transforming ordinary items into true art.

When is the Boysenberry Festival?

The Knott’s Boysenberry Festival traditionally runs from March through April. It is truly a beautiful time of year in Buena Park.

Mild to warm sunny temperatures and blooming landscapes make it ideal for wandering between themed areas, saying hi to Snoopy, riding a roller coaster, and savoring boysenberry treats outdoors.

Because the festival is offered for a limited time, it’s wise to plan ahead. Spring break is one of the most popular seasons at Knott’s Berry Farm. Families, food lovers, and thrill-seekers gather to experience both the festival and the park’s classic attractions.  We loved seeing the number of returning fans that are decked out in all things Boysenberry purple.

What food is available at the Boysenberry Festival?

At the heart of the Knott’s Boysenberry Festival is its tantalizing lineup of dishes. It’s a creative fusion of savory foods, specialty desserts, and inventive beverages that showcase the versatility of the boysenberry.

For those eager to taste as much as possible, the Boysenberry Festival Tasting Card is often the best way to explore the event’s annual food offerings. It allows visitors to sample a variety of dishes throughout the park at a reasonable price.

This year’s new food offerings join festival favorites in imaginative ways. Savory selections include bold creations like spicy Korean boysenberry bulgogi, where sweet berry notes balance rich, marinated Korean beef.

Boysenberry BBQ meats are glazed in a tangy sauce that highlights the fruit’s natural sweetness, like boysenberry brisket and tender carnitas.

Guests can also savor hearty options such as boysenberry sausage and boysenberry pizza, each blending smoky, salty flavors with subtle fruit undertones. We also loved the boysenberry sausage with crispy potato tots and a boysenberry sauce on top.

The boysenberry brick offers a comforting golden brioche topped with sweet boysenberry sauce and ice cream.  It’s one of the best things to try for those craving something indulgent, yet uniquely sweet.

Being vegan is also not an issue, and you will find no shortage of specialty desserts and other foods. Creamy vegan boysenberry cheesecake delivers a rich, velvety bite layered with vibrant berry flavor.

Finally, the refreshing boysenberry twist soft serve swirls bright purple into a nostalgic treat, a sweet snack perfect for cooling off from the California sunshine.

Throughout the park, all types of food from all over the world shimmer under a glossy boysenberry glaze, and decadent sweets are finished with artful boysenberry swirls and syrups.

For those over 21, the beverage program is equally impressive. Guests can sip on boysenberry sangria, a spicy boysenberry michelada, and even a sweet cherry and bourbon boysenberry slushie.

California craft beers add depth to the festival’s drink selection, including boysenberry beer.

The drink offerings give the event a subtle wine- or beer-festival flair while remaining accessible and fun for the theme park crowd.

With so many food options, the festival encourages exploration. From smoky barbecue to delicate pastries, each dish tells part of the story of the famous berry.
