On the Road with the Cooking Ladies – A Book Review and a Giveaway

Whether you’re cooking for two after a long day at the office, feeding a few friends over the weekend or putting together a feast for a holiday celebration, there is nothing better tasting than food cooked on the grill. Some folks are very firm on their preference of gas, wood, or charcoal but honestly, my tastes are interchangeable; I enjoy my food cooked any which way on the grill and am not picky at all.

My husband and I have managed to keep our grilling routine fresh, rotating our usual recipes selection regularly. Still, even after throwing in some seafood and different cuts of meats, and different marinades into the mix, it was evident we were in need of some more unique inspiration. Sure, burgers and dogs are kind of synonymous to outdoor cooking, but ordinary hamburgers and hot dogs do tend to get a little old sometimes. Even throwing on some fresh veggies, or baby potatoes can lose their lustre over time. Once you find yourself growing tired of the same old routine, it can be hard to maintain your love of grilling without some assistance from a master by way of cookbook or two.

When fellow IFWTWA member Lamont Mackay contacted me with the opportunity to receive a review copy of On the Road with the Cooking Ladies: Let’s Get Grilling, I was beyond thrilled. Not only was the book dedicated to my favourite method of cooking but, it takes your old grilling routine and transforms it into delicious recipes that’ll have your friends and family coming back for more.

On the Road with the Cooking Ladies

Written by two friends, Phyllis Hinz and Lamont Mackay, who traded a life of restaurants and catering for freedom and travel, Let’s Get Grilling, is 248 pages of freshly grilled awesomeness.

For over nine years Phyllis and Lamont toured throughout North America in their RV, sampling the many flavours and styles of cuisine offered across the thousands of miles travelled. From Boston to San Diego, On the Road with the Cooking Ladies showcases a collection of grilling recipes as well as anecdotes from their travels. With recipes such as Peachy Country-Style Pork Ribs, West Coast Cedar Plank Salmon, and Maple Bacon Onion Rings (pictured below) these ladies will inspire readers to broaden their food horizons while providing a rich food history and an engaging narrative of their travels to uncover those histories.
